Harnoor Gill to receive Peel Peace Medallion

The YMCA Peace Medallion recognizes individuals building peace in their communities and inspiring the lives of others. This year, the YMCA of Greater Toronto recognizes six outstanding leaders at ceremonies throughout the GTA during the 28th anniversary of YMCA Peace Week.

Peel Peace Medallion Recipient – Harnoor Gill

Harnoor has been a volunteer since he was three-years-old when he sold cookies door-to-door to raise money for the Hong Kong Red Cross. When his family immigrated to Canada, it didn’t take long for Harnoor to start numerous school groups and clubs inspiring youth to volunteer, give back and build a more peaceful world. He’s already clocked in 1,000 volunteer hours with 20 different groups.

In February, Harnoor founded the Peace Welcome Club in Georgetown to welcome new immigrants, especially youth. When he was going through a very difficult time being bullied as a newcomer, his parents encouraged him to reach out to others, and he says that was the key. Harnoor encourages youth and adults to get out and give back to their community, creating peace around us. To help the poor children of India he began a jean drive and has personally taken over hundreds of jeans. On hearing of the suffering of the First Nations youth and their challenges, he’s begun another jean drive and projects to help them as well. Harnoor creates opportunities for youth to get involved and encourages all of us to be better citizens of the world.
